如何我的汉语?(rúhé wǒde hànyǔ) How’s my Chinese?

I’d like to think I am getting a marginal amount of fluency in Chinese. I know somewhere between 250-300 chinese characters. I can read and write about that many, but not always from memory. I am sending SMS messages in Chinese with quite a bit of ease, but my grammatical structure is still English, and merely a translation into Chinese.

I actually don’t speak Chinese on a regular basis. I know, tsk tsk, as I am in China. It’s amazing how many people I will speak to in Chinese, and then without any prompting they will switch to English on me. It’s disappointing. I need to find some Chinese friends with absolutely no English capabilities so I can ensure I practice Chinese.

From week to week, my time varies. Some weeks I am able to put more emphasis on studying. I have all the necessary tools, I just need to better utilize them.

As the Chinese often say, 加油, (jiāyóu) Come on!
